Since its inception in 1941, the Moscow Mule has become one of the most popular cocktails among bartenders and bar-goers alike. The result of a collaboration between Smirnoff Vodka and Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer, it was the first vodka-based recipe popularized in the U.S. The perfect cool refreshment for a hot summer day or an after-work happy hour, it’s as simple as it is refreshingly delicious. Along with a classic Moscow Mule recipe, below you’ll find some others that put a tasty spin on this timeless cocktail.

Classic Moscow Mule

The classic Moscow Mule consists of:
2 oz. vodka
5 oz. ginger beer
.5 oz of fresh lime juice

To prepare, add all the ingredients in a mug (preferably copper) or Collins glass. Add some ice, and garnish with a lime wedge.

Kentucky Mule

The Kentucky Mule gives the recipe a Southern twist. The majority of the drink remains the same; all that changes is the base spirit as this drink calls for bourbon instead of vodka.

Ingredients:

2oz bourbon
4-6 oz. ginger beer
.5 oz lime juice

To prepare, mix all ingredients in a mug or glass and garnish with a mint leaf or lime.

Mexico Mule

The Mexico Mule is another variation that swaps the base spirit of the Moscow Mule while retaining the rest of the recipe.

Ingredients:
2 oz tequila
.5 oz lime juice
4-6 oz ginger beer

Mix all ingredients in a mug or glass and garnish with a lime.

Garden Mule

Courtesy of Something New for Dinner, this concoction is perfect for parties as it’s a treat for the eyes as well as the tastebuds.

Ingredients:
4 slices cucumber
16 blueberries
6 mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
2 oz vodka
1 oz lime juice
4 oz ginger beer
1 piece candied ginger

To prepare, put the cucumber, 8 blueberries, and mint leaves in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Muddle until crushed and juicy. Add a handful of ice, plus the vodka and lime. Cover the shaker and shake for about 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker develops a nice coat of condensation. Fill a mug with ice and strain the liquid from the shaker into the mug. Top it off with ginger beer and 4 blueberries. Thread 4 more blueberries and the candied ginger onto a toothpick. Finally, garnish with a sprig of mint and the toothpick of ginger and blueberries.

Gin Gin Mule

As its name suggests, the Gin Gin Mule replaces the vodka with gin. The ginger beer/gin combination has long been a favorite in the U.K., which is where this variation has its roots. It may also be known as  London Mule for that reason.

Ingredients:
2 oz. gin (Tangeray or Beefeater are preferred)
.5 oz fresh lime juice
5 fresh mint leaves
5 oz ginger beer

To prepare, combine the juice and mint in a copper mug or Collins glass. Muddle the mint. Fill the glass with ice and add the gin. Stir until chilled. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a sprig of mint and piece of lime.

Lavender Mule

This delightful lavender-infused variation takes a bit more preparation than some of the others, but it’s well worthwhile.

To create the lavender syrup, you’ll need:
.5 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 tablespoons dried culinary lavender

Combine the sugar and dried food-grade lavender in a heat safe bowl. Pour boiling water over the mixture and stir until sugar is dissolved. Let the lavender steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain the lavender out and let the syrup cool to room temperature, then refrigerate.

To make the drink, you’ll need:
1 oz lemon juice
2 oz vodka
1 oz elderflower syrup
2 oz ginger beer
Lavender syrup
Lavender ice cubes (optional)

If you opt for the lavender ice cubes, place a few pinches of dried culinary lavender in an ice cube tray, cover with water and freeze. You can also add in a few dried food-grade rose petals for a dash of color and sweet scent.

Combine the cocktail ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and stir until chilled, then strain over the lavender ice cubes.

Glasgow Mule

Invented by Damon Boelte of Prime Meats in Brooklyn, NY, the Glasgow Mule features blended scotch, St. Germain, and Angostura bitters mingled with the Moscow Mule’s signature ginger beer and citrus combo.

Ingredients:
1.5 oz blended scotch whiskey
.5 oz St. Germain
.75 oz lemon juice

1 dash Angostura bitters
4 oz ginger beer (Fever Tree preferred)
Lemon wheel and piece of candied ginger (garnish)

Add all ingredients in a mug (preferably copper) or Collins glass. Add crushed ice. Stir. Garnish with lemon wheel and ginger candy.

These are just a few of the myriad variations out there. The Moscow Mule’s simplicity makes it a perfect base for trying new and innovative combinations. If you have a favorite variation of your own, we’d love to hear it!
